As the two major
sporting events, FIFA’14 and WIMBLEDON’14 are going on, we are getting all the
surprises.
Can we learn something from them? Here, I tried to figure it out.
Wimbledon,
is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and widely considered the most
prestigious. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), the
others being the Australian Open, the French Open (Roland Garros) and the US
Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hard court in 1988, Wimbledon is the
only Major still played on grass, the game's original surface, which gave the
game its original name of "lawn tennis".
The
FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an
international association football competition contested by the senior men's
national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football
Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The World Cup is the
most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the
Olympic Games. The 2014 FIFA World Cup is currently being contested in Brazil.
The next two World Cups will be hosted by Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.
THE
BIG STORY :
The upset: Australian teenager Nick
Kyrgios, ranked 144 has pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon
history, beating world number one Rafael Nadal in four sets to reach the
quarter-finals.
Whereas kyrgios’s mother before the match believed it would be impossible for him to beat the world’s no.1, there was a big challenge in front of him.
This is quite inspiring rather than an upset (a term used when a higher seeded player beats a lower (better) one).
This clearly
indicates that nothing is impossible if you have the right determination,
dedication and a firm belief in yourself. Of course things take time, there is
no magic wand.
Nick Kyrgios first picked up a tennis racquet aged four and has not looked
back.
On the other hand, Nadal said while congratulating kyrgios,
“Defeat was hard to take. I didn't think I played that badly. I was better in the first and third sets but I wasn't able to convert my opportunities. He was better at the other times. He did the things he needed to do to win on grass better than me."
Rafael Nadal
Nadal remains confident that he can win another title at Wimbledon and with such a spirit, I think he will.
COSTA RICA : Costa Rica is the biggest surprise among the last eight nations in FIFA in Brazil. Even
as they win, a few suspects the use of drugs.
This happens, people don’t be
able to digest the success of others easily but the struggle must be continued
to prove oneself.
Crashing out of the defending champions : Similar to nadal was the fate of FIFA World Cup and
WIMBELDON tennis grand slam tournament, defending champions SPAIN and ANDY
MURRAY respectively.
"Andy Murray's reign as Wimbeldon champion came to a stunning end as Bulgeria's Grigor Dimitrov cclinched a sensational 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, victory in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.”
“Spain had shocking exit from the ongoing Fifa
World Cup in Brazil. Over the last six years, the Spanish team has appeared indomitable,
winning two successive European Championship titles and the 2010 World
Cup in South Africa.”
This shows us that nothing is eternal. In order to
keep oneself in the competition and moreover defend the throne or
compete to acquire one, one has to constantly revise the strategies and learn
from the mistakes of one’s own as well others’.
Try and never repeat the same mistakes and keep all the hopes alive.
Try and never repeat the same mistakes and keep all the hopes alive.
“Hope is a good thing. May be the best of the good
things and no good thing ever dies.”
-The
Shawshank Redemption
SUMMARY:
So,
on the whole the lesson that can be learnt is:
-If
you are a champion, keep your feet on the ground and spirit up in the air. Never stop improving and never ever think “your
opponent is weak enough”.
-If
you are yet to be one then don’t lose hope, keep on improving, learn from your
mistakes and surely get some inspiration from Costa Rica and Kyrgios.
P.S.:
Remember there is no magic wand, right dedication is the only key.
